Maurice Sendak

Today the world lost one of the greatest artists of our time, Maurice Sendak. He was my favorite children's writer and illustrator and it seriously brought me to tears when I heard he had died on NPR on my way to work this morning. To celebrate his life I have included some of my favorite images of his work as well as clips from his hilarious interview with Stephen Colbert. (All images by Maurice Sendak).

saturday and sinuses

Today I woke up with a sinus infection on the left side of my face, which has been a bit distressing. Do you know of any good home remedies? So far I've tried a Neti Pot, drinking apple cider vinegar, and Emergen-C, to no avail.  Yet, besides that I've had lovely day. I just got back from a hike with Dusty, and later I'm going out to dinner with one of my friends. We haven't decided where to go yet, but I'm craving Thai curry. Any suggestions? **Update: I continued my Neti Pot, Apple Cider Vinegar, Vitamin routine and by today (Tuesday) I am feel 100% better! Yay for natural cures!

Anthropologie Wedding

I just found out today via one of my favorite blogs, that Anthropologie is coming out with a wedding collection. The new line can be found here starting on Valentine's Day. I'm super excited to see what they have, I'm sure much of it will be out of my price range but it'll be good for inspiration at the very least. What do you think?

Last weeked Dusty surprised me with a vase full of roses from his backyard. The gesture was incredibly charming, and the flowers were better than store-bought. What sweet things have your "honeys" done for you? Also, don't you just love the above painting by Picasso. I love how simple it is (so much so that I have a framed print of it in my bedroom). :-)

Yesterday Dusty and I watched a documentary made by Ken Burns about the life of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. I'd always been a fan of his work but his life story is super interesting/crazy too. What kind of architecture do you like?

Bathtubs

This morning I decided (since it's Saturday and all) to skip taking a shower and take a bath instead. It was infinitely more relaxing and I am definitely going to try to do it more often. Do you like baths? Or are you an all showers all the time kind of person? Also, do you have a cool bathtub? Growing up, my neighbors across the street had (and still have) an amazing clawfoot tub which I have always been quite jealous of.

All of this talk about bathtubs reminds me of one of my most favorite children's books of all time, King Bidgood's in the Bathtub, written by Audrey Wood and Illustrated by her husband Don Wood. The story is truly charming and the illustrations are some of the best. The couple has also written many other wonderful stories which I'm sure I'll mention at a later date. Ballet

Check out these crazy shoes by Alexander McQueen, he calls them Titanic Ballerina Pumps. I first saw them today on www.rachelzoe.com. They're like art-like futuristic robot ballet shoes (haha)! Did you do ballet or dance when you were a kid? I tried dance when I was 4 or 5 and HATED it, I am definitely NOT the graceful type. However I did like looking at Degas' ballerina paintings and sculptures at the Norton Simon Museum.

Blueberries

So according to WebMD and numerous other sources blueberries are considered a "superfood" as they help keep away all sorts of bad stuff like heart disease, cancer, and high cholesterol. Just now Dusty and I made some delicious banana, blueberry, and buttermilk smoothies. I know that buttermilk sounds like a weird ingredient but it's has all the same stuff as milk with fewer calories and a yummy tart flavor. I highly recommend it!

Speaking of blueberries, did you ever read the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey (Pictured above)? I have to admit it wasn't my favorite as a kid (I didn't like that the pictures weren't colorful) but now I think it's adorable!

Bedtime

Do you have a bedtime routine? I don't now because I'm always going to bed at different times and under different circumstances, but I wish I did. When I was little I didn't like to go to sleep without being read to and "tucked in", and in highschool I had to have a cup of tea and read a book before sleeping. Some of my favorite bedtime themed children's books are Mickey in the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak, Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, and anything illustrated by Michael Hague made for sweet dreams. All three are pictured above in the order mentioned (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol illustrated by Michael Hague is the last shown). What books did you read when you were young? Or if you have kids what books do you like reading to them?

Kitties

So I'm the oldest of five kids, I have one younger brother (two years my junior) and three younger sister's ages almost 12, almost 10, and 7. My three younger sisters love animals and as such LOVE the cable network Animal Planet. In general I'm not the biggest fan of animal shows but the other day there was nothing on and I found myself watching (and enjoying) Cats 101. It's so funny to see people so dedicated to their pets. I really liked one woman, artist Cassie Graus, in particular who had several "exotic breed" cats who were both pets and muses for her art.

Aren't they the cutest???
